Exposed root plates

For my last post of 2015, I leave you with these two images from a horse chestnut in Hampstead Heath that, most probably due to a land slide, has had half of its root system exposed. Without doubt one of the coolest things I have seen in recent times.

Precariously balanced, almost! Perhaps only its lack of exposure and its neighbours’ root systems have lead to this tree remaining upright.

Peering in for a closer shot, we can see a few roots have remained attached and are supporting the tree on this side.
